Collapse ▲Second generation codling moth is the main insect of concern this week, with first generation brown marmorated stink bug emergence predicted to start in about a week in lower elevation orchards (<1300 ft).
Codling moth: In Henderson County, approximately 1400 degree days (DD) have accumulated since codling moth biofix, and this coincides with optimum timing of an insecticide targeting the second generation. While a single application is usually sufficient in orchards with low populations, a second application may be necessary where pheromone trap captures are greater than 5 to 10 moths per trap about 10 days after the first application.
As mentioned in previous posts, insecticides targeting second generation codling moth are rarely needed in orchards using mating disruption for multiple years, but low populations should be confirmed with pheromone trap monitoring.
In Cleveland County (1000 ft elevation) about 1785 DD have accumulated, which coincides with about 75% emergence of the second generation, so unless pheromone trap captures indicate otherwise, most orchards should be past the need for additional applications for this insect.
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug: DD accumulations in Henderson and Cleveland County are about 522 and 695, respectively, as of July 7. Emergence of first generation adults is predicted at about 740 DD, which is predicted in Cleveland County later this week, so an insecticide application next week where this insect is a concern is recommended. In Henderson County and similar elevations, we remain several weeks away from initial emergence.
